Book Review: Dune by Frank Herbert (published by Hodder & Stoughton)

Wow. This classic science fiction novel blew me to the furthest future and back again.  It’s a masterpiece.  Set in a universe where planets are controlled by noble family houses under the Emperor from the imperial ruling family, House Corrino, it tells the story of Paul Atreides, son of Duke Leto and heir to House Atreides.  Paul’s mother is a Bene Gesserit ‘witch’ with unique powers of persuasion that she has taught Paul.

Book Review: This is London by Ben Judah (published by Picador)

I saw Ben Judah talk about his book This is London at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August 2016 and immediately went out and purchased it.  This is London is narrative non-fiction written by foreign correspondent Ben Judah who turns his attention to the lives of Londoners, but not the city dwellers who we all think of when we think of the capital, but to the immigrants, both legal and illegal. This is a tale of the Russian oligarchs, the Arab royalty, the Afghans, Nigerians, Poles, Romanians, Lithuanians and Filipinas.  Not a cockney in sight.

Book Review: Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz (published by Minotaur)

I was lucky enough to read this novel whilst on holiday, lounging by my friend’s pool in Dubai and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a fast-paced thriller focused on the life of Evan Smoak, otherwise known as Orphan X, otherwise known as the Nowhere Man.  A black ops trained assassin from the Orphan program, Evan has gone rogue and is now a pro bono helper of those in dire situations with nowhere else to turn.

Book Review: Florence Grace by Tracy Rees (published by Quercus)

I had the great pleasure of meeting the author Tracy Rees at an inspiring and informative Marie Claire and Bookends event in London.  We were split into smaller discussion groups and Tracy headed up mine.  She was encouraging and gave some insightful advice.  I was lucky enough to receive a copy of her second novel Florence Grace as part of my ticket to that event (along with novels from the other authors there which I’ll read soon!).
