At the time of the novel Violya, the warrior Violya is twenty years old. Born in Riaow, the capital of Peqkya, she grew up in a pen where she met her best friend Emmya. As with every Peqkian, V does not know who her parents are, as Peqkian custom dictates ‘No baby will ever know it’s parents and no parents will ever know their baby’. Violya, or V, showed excellence in warrior training from an early age. However, although she worked hard to cultivate her talent, she was crippled with self-doubt. As a child, she grew very tall very quickly and suffered from bullying which knocked her confidence. As a teenager she would sneak out of the warrior barracks and into a place in the bamboo forest just outside of Riaow. There she would self-harm in an attempt to quiet the voices in her head that told her she was no good. It was on one of these occasions where she cut herself too aggressively and passed out. Emmya found her and brought her back to the Head Warrior Gosya (Gogo). V had received a vision from the Stone Prophetess Sybilya which told her to leave Riaow for exactly one year on her eighteenth birthday and return on her nineteenth birthday. Gogo granted V permission to follow Sybilya’s instruction, and V went north-east as directed. Emmya calls this time ‘V’s Lost Year’.
As a skilled warrior, V was Melokai Ramya’s personal guard, along with her friends, and exceptional warriors, Emmya and Lizya. V has great respect for Melokai Ramya and the ruler always treated her with kindness. Later, V became the personal guard to the cave creature Gwrlain, before being selected to lead a trading delegation into pygmie land in the north-west. As captain, V lead the party through Peqkya to Mlaw village, and then crossed the sinkhole into the country she later learnt was called Majute. She was then recalled by Melokai Ramya with the intention of being sent to Troglo, however events in Riaow halted that mission. V is shy, loathes any kind of public speaking and hates to stand out, ever since being bullied for her stature. Although shy, she has many friends and is a respected warrior. She enjoys solitude and actively seeks it out and loves to draw energy from the nature around her, loving the sound of tinkling streams and the lush green trees, and the majestic snow-capped mountains. Her close companions are Emmya, Lizya and the warriors Finya, Laurya and Daya. She is also open to other peoples and cultures and is curious as to what lies outside of the country and beyond the Meliok mountains. She considers her mentor and inspiration to be the Head Warrior Gogo, who trained her and encouraged her, as well as having a close affinity to the Stone Prophetess Sybilya. In terms of appearance, V has black skin, which has an aura that makes it shine almost silver. She has red hair that she keeps cropped closely as she believes it’s another reason to be bullied for. Her eyes are brown, and as mentioned, she’s very tall, with a lithe, lean and powerful frame. She dresses in warrior’s garb with a small dagger strapped to each bicep plus a short sword at her waist. Her favourite food is crispbreads and pots of pickle chutney to eat them with. She tends to stick to water, however does drink wine every now and then. She relaxes by seeking out solitude in the bamboo forest and by spending time with Emmya on their regular whine and wine get-togethers. >>>Violya (In the Heart of the Mountains #2) is out now!
